This Week 150 Years Ago in Hickman – September 15, 1876 Edmond W. Cole, president of the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railroad, stated that the best location for a Western terminus for a permanent trans-Mississippi connection would be at Hickman. He planned to “sink 25 or 30 rock barges” to protect the riverbank and if it proved successful a $50 or $60,000 elevator would be constructed. Ten carloads of rock from near Nashville were received on September 13th for the Hickman City wharf. The Jackson Purchase Historical Society will meet Saturday, September 26 in the Community Room of the Graves County Public Library, 601 North 17th Street, Mayfield, Kentucky beginning at 10:30. The speaker will be Kentucky Supreme Court Justice Shea Nickell. Justice Nickell will discuss the career of Graves County native Alben Barkley and discuss items from his extensive collection of Barkley memorabilia. Barkley, who served as Vice President with President Harry S. Truman, was born in Wheel, Kentucky in 1877.
