The Jackson Purchase Historical Society will meet on Saturday, August 22nd at 10:30 AM. The focus of the meetings will be on Kentuckians at Pearl Harbor, with a special focus on the Reverend Howell Forgy, who was a Navy chaplain at Pearl Harbor during the attack, He was on the USS New Orleans when the attack started and is credited with coining the phrase “Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition” to encourage the sailors on the New Orleans. Stories of Interest from the Hickman Courier from August 11, 1876 It was reported that the rains of the past week were “worth thousands of dollars to our farmers.” “Considerable sickness” was reported in the region, but of a generally “mild type.” A new undertakers establishment opened on Clinton Street in Hickman under the proprietorship of Hertweck & Brother, “where they will at all times keep a full supply of coffins.” There were seven prisoners awaiting court dates in the Hickman City Jail, “five whites and two blacks.” Those men were William Gilmore (the same man who escaped his prison…
