JPHS to Meet on November 4th at the Martin Public Library
The Jackson Purchase Historical Society (JPHS) will meet on Saturday November 4 at 10:30 am at the Martin Public Library 410 South Lindell Street in Martin. Those who have attended JPHS meetings in Martin in the past should note that this is the NEW library building. This will be JPHS’s last meeting for 2023. The meeting is being held in connection with the Smithsonian Institution’s travelling exhibit, Voices and Votes: Democracy in America. The speaker will be Mark Dudney, Historic Preservation Planner and Dale Hollow Rural Planning Organization Coordinator from Cookeville, Tennessee. His topic is, “A Place at the Table: Tennesseans Lead the Way for American Democracy.” After the program the exhibit will be available for touring. Voices and Votes is part of the Smithsonian’s Museums on Main Street program, which connects the resources of the Smithsonian Institution with communities across the country.
Mark Dudney, a public historian, and historic preservation planner from Cookeville, will review the story of democracy in Tennessee, including discussion of the Native American and early settlement periods, the Jacksonian era, the Civil War, and the Women’s Suffrage Movement. This event, sponsored by Humanities Tennessee and the Jackson Purchase Historical Society, will include access to the Smithsonian travelling exhibit, Voices and Votes, at the Martin Public Library. The exhibit will be at the library from October 7 through November 18.
The program will also be available by ZOOM for those unable to attend in person. Register in advance to join ZOOM for this meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0vdOCurj0vGNzjG45fQ8hn3zw6UKTlKdfP
JPHS is pleased to partner with Humanities Tennessee and the Martin Public Library to connect our November program with this timely exhibit as we move towards the national election in 2024 and a gubernatorial election in Kentucky a few days after our meeting. The real power of history and the humanities is to provide context and background for all citizens to help understand contemporary issues.
