Quarterly Meeting of the Jackson Purchase Historical Society

Prior to the business session, Dr. William Mulligan, JPHS President, paused to pay tribute to prominent Murray citizen who passed away about a month before.  Through the years he served JPHS in several ways.

 

1) Approval of the minutes of the last meeting.  They were approved as printed and distributed.

2) Secretary-Treasurer’s Report.  Likewise, these were approved as printed.

3) President’s Report.  Mulligan emphasized the need and desire to make JPHS more visible.

4) Old Business

a) Membership.  Perhaps JPHS can develop a more obvious presence via contact with other historical and genealogical groups.

b) Possible Essay Contest for Middle and High Schools.  Mulligan is still following up on a possible event involving Murray State and UT Martin and welcomes input.

c) Proposed Stamp for bicentennial of the Jackson Purchase.  JPHS has not yet received permission about a stamp.  Maybe an artist could develop an image. We could possibly just rely on publicity.  Dr. Bill Wells and Greg Miller advocated contacting area government officials and considered acting accordingly.  We will learn more in July at Clinton.

d) Journal

i) New Editor.  After current Journal Editor Sarah Strange indicated 2016 would be her last year putting the volume together, Mulligan approached Dr. Jim Humphreys, a well-qualified MSU History colleague, who accepted the offer to be Editor.

Appropriately Mulligan believed a  formal thanks should be given to Strange for her notable leadership with the Journal.    Wells moved such a move, Dr. Duane Bolin seconded, and the group unanimously agreed.

ii) Articles needed by May 1.  Strange would accept articles till May 1st.  Previously Mulligan had sent 50 letters to area residents soliciting articles with good results for the 2016 edition.

Someone mentioned the submission guidelines are rather formidable.  Based on his experience, Humphreys can easily simplify them.

A question arose about having previous journals digitized.  Mulligan or Dr. Bob Lochte will talk with the MSU Library Dean.

5) New Business

a) Election of officers for 2016-17.  Mulligan appointed Vice President Dr. Bob Lochte and Secretary-Treasurer Marvin Downing as the nominating committee to find 2016-2017 officers.

 

The day’s program featured Lynn Bartlett speaking about her bookTobacco Barns of Western Kentucky.

 

The next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, July 16.  LaDonna Latham, Hickman County Historical and Genealogical Society, will provide the program.  Place: Hickman County Historical and Genealogical Society on the Court Square in Clinton, KY.
