At Lochte’s suggestion, the group voted to continue with the current officers until nominees can be found. The group voted JPHS director.treasurer member Marvin Downing to a 5 year term.
6) Old Business
a) Fall and Winter meeting plans. At the President’s request, Downing spoke briefly about the Martin, TN background of African-American Robert Nunley who is to be the JPHS speaker on Saturday, November 1, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. in the Weldon Public Library in Martin. Traditionally that is a joint meeting of JPHS and the West Tennessee Historical Society.
For the January JPHS meeting, President Lochte is in contact with the former Murray State Archivist Ernie Bailey to do a program about land warrants/grants in the Purchase Area to Revolutionary War veterans and the impacts of those warrants.
b) Kentucky History Awards. Lochte is moving forward with nominating the radio documentary produced by Todd Hatton and Chad Lampe of WKMS FM, Murray State, entitled Kentucky Dam: Power for the People. He will have that submitted prior to the August deadline.
7) New Business
a) JPHS website. Our society regrets that member Dieter Ullrich will be leaving Murray State for an archival position at Morehead State. Naturally that creates a vacancy regarding the website. Lochte offered to fill the void. Mulligan suggested a tech savvy MSU/UTM student could maintain it at minimum cost. Lochte will follow up. Mulligan also wondered if a Facebook account might actually be preferable.
Lochte had also sent out press releases shortly before today’s meeting.
Lochte adjourned the business session at 10:50 a.m. and introduced the program of Edward and Meagan Musselman, the owners and renovators of the old Coca-Cola building. Their Power Point photos showed the many interesting challenges they have faced.
