    This Week 150 Years Ago in Hickman – October 12, 1872

    Stories of Interest from the Hickman Courier from October 12, 1872 Republican candidate Henry H. Houston and Fulton County Democrat H. A. Tyler debated before a crowded Hickman City Hall on the evening of October 5th. The debate lasted over three hours and discussed the effects of Reconstruction, civil service reform, and other political topics of the day. The editor of the Hickman Courier declared “Tyler whipped Houston easily” and that Houston lacked “confidence in his cause.” William Frenz, proprietor of a bookstore in Hickman, proposed a City Library and Reading Room at his place of business on Clinton Street.     Jackson Purchase Historical Society to Meet in Clinton on October 22

    The Jackson Purchase Historical Society will meet at 10:30 am on October 22 at the Hickman County Historical and Genealogical Society on the Court Square (107 S. Washington Street) , Clinton, Kentucky. The program will feature a panel discussion by those involved in writing and producing the Hickman County Bicentennial book and planning the other events that celebrated this milestone. The meeting will NOT be available by ZOOM due to unavailability of a stable Wi-Fi signal.
