    Jacksin Purchase Historical Society Celebrates Ellis Wilson

    Saturday, February 18 will be Ellis Wilson Day in Mayfield, his hometown. Several community organizations have come together to celebrate the life and work of this important African American artist. Several events are planned to begin on February 15 and continue until the end of the month. The first part of the celebration will be an exhibition of three of Wilson’s paintings as well as works by other African American artists from the Jackson Purchase region that has been organized by the Icehouse Gallery.     This Week 150 Years Ago in Hickman – February 8, 1873

    Stories of Interest from the Hickman Courier from February 8, 1873 River traffic on the Ohio resumed after having been suspended for two months due to weather and ice. The German Masquerade Ball in Hickman on February 3rd was reported as being well attended, despite the “disagreeable weather,” and was found to have “no imperfections.” The participants were dressed in costumes that represented “classic, historic, mythological and dramatic characters.” The profits from Mardi Gras ball scheduled for February 25th was determined to go for the purchase of a fire engine for the city of Hickman.
