The March meeting of the Jackson Purchase Historical Society (JPHS) will be held at the Dyer County Historical Society Museum in the Professional Development Center located at 305 College Street in Dyersburg, Tennessee beginning at 10:30 am. This is a joint meeting of the Jackson Purchase Historical Society, the West Tennessee Historical Society, and the West Tennessee Heritage Initiative, an informal consortium of archives, local history libraries, and historic sites.
The meeting will focus on historic preservation projects, specifically state historic markers and nominating properties to the National Register of Historic Places. Historians, archivists, librarians, and others interested in historic preservation are invited to this special meeting. Speakers will share experiences from their work to install new state historical markers and the successful nomination of sites to the National Register of Historic Places. The event is open to the public and there is no need for advanced registration.
Speakers will include Danny Walden, president of the Dyer County Historical Society, and Bill Mulligan, president of the Jackson Purchase Historical Society. Walden’s presentation will focus on the Society’s work to design and install three official state historical markers during Dyer County’s recent bicentennial celebration. Mulligan will provide an overview of the National Register process and reflect on his work as an author of successful nominations and as a member of the Kentucky State Historic Preservation Review Board for twenty years. Participants are invited to share additional experiences from their work with historic preservation and public history programming during an “open mic” section of the program.
Following the program, attendees will have the opportunity to tour the extensive exhibits of the Dyer County Historical Society Museum. For more information, contact Erik Nordberg (enordber@utm.edu / 731-881-7070)
