Bobbie Smith Bryant to speak at Jackson Purchase Historical Society on January 23rd
The Jackson Purchase Historical Society will begin its 2021 program on January 23 with a presentation by on Kentucky Foodways. Because of restrictions on the size of public gatherings, the meeting will be held through Zoom. To register in advance for this meeting click JPHS Meeting – January 23, 2021. Bobbie Smith Bryant is no stranger to the Jackson Purchase Historical Society or the Jackson Purchase region. A native of Calloway County, she has written four books on the history of the county and has spoken about her work at previous Society meetings and to many other groups in the region. In addition, she has shared her work through articles published in the Journal of the Jackson Purchase Historical Society. She also has an occasional column in the Murray Ledger-Times. She is the lead on the planned Bicentennial History of Calloway County that will be published in 2022. Anyone who’s interested in contributing is encouraged to contact her to see how they may become involved in the project.
Food is an important part of any culture and regional variations in what is eaten and how it is prepared are meaningful aspects of people’s lives at various seasons of the year and in the celebration of various holidays and life events. Ms. Bryant’s book, Passions of the Black Patch: Cooking and Quilting in Western Kentucky, offers one of the best descriptions of food as part of the culture of western Kentucky’s distinctive cooking style. Her presentation will build on her book and continuing research. Anyone who has heard her speak before knows that her presentation will not only be informative but entertaining and interesting. The society is delighted that Ms. Bryant returning to speak to us and share her ongoing work on Jackson Purchase history. Please do join us!
