Minutes of the Summer Meeting at the McCracken County Public Library

President Bob Lochte called the meeting together at 10:30.
1) Approval of the minutes of the April 27, 2013 meeting. Typed copies of the minutes were distributed among members.
2) Secretary’s Report – Marvin Downing. After allowing time for members to look over the minutes, Lochte called for approval. Motion was made and seconded and members approved.
3) Treasurer’s Report – Marvin Downing. In addition to shared information on the distributed copies, Downing indicated 90 Journal copies each year might be too many and perhaps also necessitated considering raising annual dues. Downing will collect information. After a motion and a second, the report was approved.
4) Vice-President’s Report – Charles Bobbitt. Bobbitt called attention to a Civil War program at the Weldon Library in Martin on November 2nd. He tentatively hopes, perhaps jointly with the West Tennessee Historical Society. JPHS can have a January program at the new Discovery Park in Union City, Tennessee. The Discovery Park opens November 2, 2013.
5) Journal Editor’s Report. As printed on the distributed page Editor Sarah Strange welcomes submission of materials and questions to her at strangetx@gmail.com. The submission deadline is May 1, 2014.
6) Elections – Officers and Directors. In the absence of other nominees Lochte presented the officer slate: Lochte-President; Bobbitt-Vice President; Secretary-Marvin Downing; and Treasurer-Marvin Downing. Lochte indicated Downing is willing to be Secretary until someone else steps forward. Robertson moved acclamation, Marion Claybrook seconded, and they were elected.
– Board of Directors. Charles Blair’s initial term on the Board expires this year, necessitating an election. Blair is willing to continue serving if re-elected. Bobbitt moved, and Lonnie Maness seconded re-election of Blair to a 5-year term. The membership approved.
7) Old Business
Docents for Wrather Museum. Bill Wells and Lochte have followed up on JPHS and others volunteering as possible docents. As Lochte reported, perhaps 4-5 volunteers have been identified though JPHS needs more information for them before they commit. By the way, Wrather is now under the rubric of Murray State Libraries. Dieter Ullrich, Director of Murray State University Special Collections and JPHS member, said no one at MSU, including the Interim President, had made a decision about Wrather as of two weeks ago. So, JPHS awaits further details.
Fall and Winter meeting plans. As indicated above, Bobbitt had already
announced November and January plans. Lochte asked if there were any program suggestions beyond those two dates. He still would like a meeting about or maybe at a historic church, maybe a First Christian Church he mentioned.
New Business.
Kentucky Historical Society Awards. The deadline for nominations is August 16th. Downing thought he remembered Sarah Strange mention possibly nominating the JPHS Journal. Melissa Earnest will look into the criteria about the Journal’s eligibility and report back. Someone wondered about the Kentucky Dam documentary to which Ullrich furnished documents.
The business session ended at 10:50 a.m.

Program. Robertson introduced our speaker Dr. Andrew Halford, a retired WKCTC English professor, who is well versed on the life of noted humorist, journalist, and author Paducah native Irvin S. Cobb.

Adjournment. Lochte thanked Bill Wells for bringing his guest Dr. Jack Vincent of Mayfield and hoped the latter enjoyed proceedings enough to join JPHS. Lochte mentioned members might visit the Market House Museum or the American Quilter’s Society Museum.
