Stories of Interest from the Hickman Courier from September 28, 1872
- The Sixth Annual Fulton County Fair concluded on September 28th and the Hickman Courier listed the numerous award winners from the previous days. Over 200 certificates and ribbons were handed out to participants from best sour pickle to best aged boar. The attendance was more than anticipated and equal to other fairs from the past five years.
- It was suggested by the editor of the Hickman Courier that Kentucky and Tennessee counties in the Jackson Purchase consolidate and rotate their county fairs since the increased number of exhibitions in the region had reduced attendance and profits.
- Ballot boxes were being constructed and prepared by Fulton County authorities for the upcoming election in November.
- A $300 bet was published in the Hickman Courier that Ed Crossland would be reelected as Congressman for the First District.
- Winfred B. McConnel was encouraged to campaign for the Kentucky State Legislature.
- George E. Rogers, the oldest Methodist minister in the United States, planned to preach at the Hickman Methodist Church on September 29th.
- A public meeting was announced for October 3rd at Sassafras Ridge to discuss the proposed levee and railroad from Hickman to Madrid Bend.
- A young man by the name of Cox, who resided near Clinton, was killed by a train at Moscow on September 25th. His body was reported as being sheared in two when found.
- The first annual Graves County Fair was to begin on October 29th.
- B. Hodge and Lucien Anderson addressed the citizens of Mayfield at the Graves County Courthouse on September 18th. An attendee declared that Hodge was “superior to all the Greeley speakers” and Anderson advocated a political party of “rottenness and corruption.”
- R. Black, the Republican elector for the First Congressional District, resigned and Lucien Anderson became his replacement. Judge Charles S. Marshall and Reverend George H. Dupree, an African American, were appointed as Assistant Electors for the District.
- Former President Andrew Johnson announced that he would visit Dyersburg to give an address sometime in October.
- The Dyer County Fair was scheduled for the week of October 15th.
