The Jackson Purchase Historical Society had a delightful meeting in Martin, Tennessee at the Weldon Public Library on Saturday, November 2nd, 2019. JPHS President Bill Mulligan opened the short business meeting before making a presentation to Dr. David Maness, son of long-time JPHS member, Dr. Lonnie Maness, who died in August of 2019. Dr. Marvin Downing, a colleague of Dr. Lonnie Maness, introduced Dr. David Maness, to those in attendance. The presentation included a certificate, officially establishing the Dr. Lonnie E. Maness Award which will recognize the outstanding article in the Journal of the JPHS each year. Dr. David Maness then spoke briefly about his father’s legacy.

Dr. Alice-Catherine Carls then took the floor, speaking eloquently about the area returning to peace at the conclusion of World War I. Dr. Carls’ talk was “quite good, both in style and substance,” said Dr. Mulligan. Her passion about this particular time in history was very evident. It is so important we not forget those who did their part behind the scenes of battle and helped keep the local economies solid and communities functioning.
