Quarterly Meeting, Saturday, July 25
Jackson Purchase Historical Society welcomes historian and educator George Humphreys Saturday, July 25, in Murray, Kentucky.
Dr. George Humphreys will speak to members and guests of the Jackson Purchase Historical Society in Murray. His topic is “A Visual Perspective on Western Kentucky in the 20th Century.” The quarterly meeting of the Jackson Purchase Historical Society begins at 10:30 AM Saturday, July 25th, in room 115, Wilson Hall, on the campus of Murray State University. The meeting is open to the public and free of charge, but seating is limited.
Through maps and photographs collected from his research, Dr. Humphreys will provide a quick overview of the important role of the region in Kentucky politics and how the politics helped change western Kentucky. The presentation is based in part on his book The Democratic Rock of Gibraltar: The Rise and Fall of Western Kentucky Democratic Politics Since the New Deal, forthcoming in 2016 from the University Press of Kentucky.
Dr. Humphreys is the Extended Campus Director, Muhlenberg County Campus of Madisonville Community College. He holds both B.A. and M.A. degrees in history from Murray State University and a Ph.D. in European History from the University of Oklahoma. Prior to his position with Madisonville Community College, Dr. Humphreys spent 19 years as Research Director for the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
